JERRY N. ALLEN, NAVY

Why did you join the military? To serve my country and to travel and see more of the world.

What was your years of service? I served 8 years, 1980 to 1987.

What job did you have? What did that job entail? Interior Communications Electrician. We worked on radar / sonar / phone systems / intercoms / fresh water salinity systems / anything to do with communications on a ship.

How has your military service prepared you for a job at Logan? I learned to be disciplined and to work well with others in very unique situations.

What is your fondest memory of being in the military? I was on a repair ship and got to fly a lot to work on other ships. From flying on helicopters to being shot off the flight deck of an aircraft carrier. Lots of fun!

Anything else you’d like to share? The military gave me a start and Logan Aluminum has given me very good opportunities to utilize what I learned in the Navy.

ANTHONY WRIGHT, ARMY

Why did you join the military? I joined the military to do something different. I was really shy growing up and wanted to try and push myself. I wasn’t mentally ready for college but I knew I wanted to do something.

What was your years of service? I started basic training on August 18, 2000 and served active duty until January 3, 2013. I served in 10 years in the 1st Brigade, 101st Airborne at Fort Campbell, KY, and 2.5 years as an Army Liaison the the Joint Chiefs of staff office at the Pentagon.

What job did you have? What did that job entail? My military occupational specialty was an infantryman, but I served all roles from rifleman to platoon Sergeant. And as an NCO (Non-commissioned officer) academy instructor teaching leadership. I had the opportunity to go to many training courses – 3 leadership schools, Air Assault school, Airborne school, Pathfinder school, close quarters battle and advanced close quarters battle, advanced marksmanship, demolitions, and reconnaissance leaders course. 

What is your fondest memory of being in the military?​​​​​​​ My fondest memory of the military would be when my unit got to participate in the raid that brought down Saddam Hussein’s sons on July 22, 2003 in Mosul, Iraq. I can remember how happy myself and the guys I served with were, as well as how grateful the Iraqi people were.

How has your military service prepared you for a job at Logan? I think the biggest things that the Army gave me are leadership skills, critical thinking, drive and work ethic. Those are things that I use everyday at Logan.​​​​​​​

JOSH NOKES, MARINES

Why did you join the military? ​​​​​​​I joined the military because I wanted to serve my country and do something I could be proud of.  Military service is a tradition in my family. Between my dad, my brothers and myself. Six of us have served in the Marine Corps and one in the Army.

What was your years of service? My years of service were from 2008-2013.

What job did you have? What did that job entail? I served as an Advanced Aircraft Communications/Navigation Systems Technician.

*Avionics Technician responsibilities include: Installation, testing, calibration, or repair of avionics equipment, such as radar, radio, navigation, and missile control systems in rotary and fixed wing aircraft; responsible for testing and troubleshooting instruments, components, and assemblies, using circuit testers, oscilloscopes, or signal generators.

How has your military service prepared you for a job at Logan? My service in the Marine Corps helped me to develop multiple invaluable skills. Among those are many skills required to be successful at Logan. Military service equips you with the ability to solve problems under pressure. It teaches you to analyze a situation, find the root cause, identify the best possible solution, establish a plan and execute. Being in the military taught me to foster a team environment. Most veterans bring with them the ability to be a ‘Team Builder’ from military service. The military trains you to lead but also teaches you how to recognize when to take a step back while still being involved in the solution.

What is your fondest memory of being in the military? I would have to say my ‘fondest’ memory would be when I landed in San Diego after a tour in Afghanistan. It was great to be back in the USA!

AUSTAN FLENER, MARINES

Why did you join the military? I always wanted to serve, wanted to do my part for our great country.

What was your years of service? 2008-2012

What job did you have? What did that job entail? ​​​​​​​0311 (Infantry). The USMC Infantry are ground forces that are trained to locate, close in, and destroy the enemy by fire and maneuver, or repel the enemy’s assault by fire and close combat. Riflemen (0311) serve as mounted or dismounted troops and act primarily as scouts, assault troops, and close combat forces within each infantry unit. The Infantry are amphibious warriors who provide versatility in chaotic and uncertain conditions of crisis and conflict.

​​​​​​​How has your military service prepared you for a job at Logan? ​​​​​​​One Word, TEAM. The military relies on each member in the team, it doesn’t matter what job you have. Others are relying on you, so each job is completed. And doing this in a safe and timely matter.

What is your fondest memory of being in the military? The brotherhood within infantry units and teams are something no one will understand, unless you have lived it. Someone can try to explain it, but the other will never fully grasp it. There are many good times, and many bad times. But being there for one another in the times of good and bad, and pushing through it, is what I miss. With that being said, I don’t think I could ever single out just one memory.

COREY BURDEN, ARMY

Why did you join the military? I joined so I’d have the opportunity to travel to different countries and to just see the world outside of Kentucky.

What was your years of service? I joined February 14, 2012 and got out February 14, 2017.

What job did you have? What did that job entail? My job was 11B (infantryman), the infantry is the Army’s main land combat force.

How has your military service prepared you for a job at Logan? Being in the Army and working at Logan is a lot alike simply because both rely on teams so much. In the Army, if the team isn’t functioning properly, the consequences could be severe, much like Logan. If one part of the team fails, the team as a whole suffers.

What is your fondest memory of being in the military? My fondest memories while I was in the Army was just the camaraderie in general – always knowing someone was there for you and knowing you were always a part of that brotherhood.

GENE MILLER, MARINES

Why did you join the military? I joined the Marines for a couple of reasons – To make my mom and grand dad proud was one; the other was I wanted something better than where I was.

What was your years of service? I served between 1985 and 1989.

What job did you have? What did that job entail? I was a hydraulic mechanic on large helicopters (CH 53E, CH53A, CH53D AND CH51A). My job was to service the hydraulic systems on the helicopters. We also had to ensure the tires were in good shape along with the brake systems. We also were responsible for the landing gear. Making sure it was in good shape. We also took care of the blades for the helicopters.

How has your military service prepared you for a job at Logan? Not sure if any of that prepared me for my job here at Logan. I believe my grand dad did that by teaching me work ethic.

What is your fondest memory of being in the military? I was able to see different parts of the country which allowed me to meet my wife. Best memory possible.

MARK PENDLEY, NAVY

Why did you join the military? I grew up in a family and community that held the duty to protect our nations unique liberties and freedoms. Out of sense of duty to protect those liberties, I decided to volunteer as a sailor in the United States Navy.

What was your years of service?  My total obligation of service was 8 years.

What job did you have? What did that job entail? I was Petty Officer in the Naval Mobile Construction Battalion. I was required develop and maintain skills of my craft as a Builder and surface combat warfare as an expeditionary combat force.

How has your military service prepared you for a job at Logan? The espirit de corps allowed me to experience how teamwork and strong leadership can result in amazing success. That understanding of leadership and teamwork fits well with the culture and the Logan Principles.

What is your fondest memory of being in the military? The loyalty to and from my teammates both professionally and personally.

Anything else you’d like to share? The opportunity to be a part of a noble purpose has served me well in my life.  The responsibility is both a humbling and empowering experience. ​​​​​​​​​​​​​​

SCOTT FRAZIER, AIR FORCE

Why did you join the military? It was a great way to learn new skills, earn money, go to school, serve my country and honor my family’s history of service.

What was your years of service? Total 23 Years.  14 Active and 9 National Guard

What job did you have? What did that job entail? I started out as an Administrative Specialist. I worked in an Orderly Room, Command Post, Intelligence, Sr. Staff, Publishing Distribution Center and many others.  There was a shortage of “Personnel Specialist” at Joint Force Head Quarters in Nashville and I was asked to cross train into Personnel and work on the Adjutant General’s staff. So, my career changed to Personnel and Human Resources.

How has your military service prepared you for a job at Logan? Wow, where to start.  Training, Discipline, Leadership, Working on a Team, Specialty skills, Change Management, Working under pressure in a diverse culture and locations around the world.

What is your fondest memory of being in the military? So many great memories. I was stationed at Scott AFB, IL outside of St. Louis in the 90’s when the Mississippi flooded. We volunteered to sandbag and give aide where we could. A levy was getting ready to give way and an elderly lady refused to leave her home. Her pastor rented a UHaul truck to move her but, she just would not go. She said as long as there was electricity in her home she would not leave.  So, we snuck around the back of the house and turned her electricity off.  She was then ready to go. We loaded all her belongings in 30 minutes into the truck and as we pulled away from the drive way, the levy broke and flooded her home and chased us as we drove to safety.  It was like watching a movie. ​​​​​​​
